Get custom fit for your router table plates using these templates! Choose
a template design for the Rockler Router
Plate (8’’ x 11’’), the Large
Rockler Router Plate (9’’ x 13’’) or the Router Lift (11-3/4’’ x 14-3/4’’.
Templates are made of ½’’ MDF material. Instructions are permanently affixed to
the template. We suggest using our 1/2’’ Pattern Cutting Bit #33536 (sold
separately, but other 1/2’’ pattern
bits also work. For best results, mount the template to the desired location
of the router plate installation using double-face tape (sold

Routers
are an adaptable wood working power tool that can be
utilized for many functions. Generally they are
used to make decorative edges, produce quality joins
and can also be used to create wood
carvings. All routers have a collet which
is the part which accepts the different router bits.
The collet varies in size for different routers
- usually these are in a 6, 6.4 (1/4"), 10 or 12.7mm
(1/2"). Motor sizes for routers also vary,
you can get small 375W (1/2HP) ones and mega powerful
2.45kW (3-1/4HP)monsters. Depending on the type
of wood working you are going to do, you will require
a different sized router. If all you are going
to do is light wood working then a middle of the range
6.4mm (1/4") router will work well for you.
Having said that, often what happens is that you
start off small and then work your way up to larger
collet sized routers as the larger collets will give
you more versatility. There are also cordless
routers available nowadays just as there are cordless
drills.

Tips
when using routers :
- As
a general rule, the router bit spins in a clockwise
direction and must be fed onto the work. If
you are cutting an edge, you need to move the router
from left to right, moving it in a counterclockwise
direction around the piece of work.
- If
you are working on the inside edge of a piece
of work ie like a hole cut into a block of wood,
then you need to move the router in a clockwise
direction.

The
router bit is what gives you the flexibility to create
lovely decorative edges to your wood working project.
Router bits come in steel or carbide tips. If
you choose to buy steel router bits you will find that
they need more frequent sharpening. Carbide tipped
router bits are more expensive but they go the distance
and have a longer lifespan than steel ones. You
will notice that some router bits have ball bearing
pilots on them, these act as guides to run along the
edge of your work.
